Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost?

Services of worship, sermons and Bible studies are provided free of charge. For these activities I accept no payment, no gratuity and no donation, in any form whatsoever.

The other activities, in particular leading reading groups, language lessons, talks and creating teaching materials, may also be offered free of charge. Depending on the circumstances, however, these activities may be paid, on terms agreed beforehand in a written quotation.

No payment is made on this site.

And travel expenses?

For in-person sessions, reimbursement of actual transport costs only and, if necessary, accommodation may be agreed in advance. It is neither a payment nor a donation. No travel expenses apply to online meetings.

Do I need to be a believer, or a Protestant?

No. The meetings are for anyone curious about the Bible, believer or not, of any denomination. No one has to state their faith.

Are you a pastor?

No. I am a theologian by training (Master of Theology, University of Geneva). I hold no mandate from any Church, and I come at the invitation of a parish, an association or a group. My theological position is described on the Talks and sermons page.

Where do the meetings take place?

By videoconference, or in person: in a parish, in a community venue or in a rented room. The venue is found by the group that invites me; I can help to look for one.

In which languages?

In French, English, Italian and Spanish.

Do I need to know Hebrew or Greek for the lessons?

No, you can start from scratch. The two-day intensive course is designed for that.

How do the forms work?

You choose a format, a book or a time slot, then you give your contact details. The request reaches me by email, at contact@meletan.fr, and I reply to you by email. The site passes the request on directly: it keeps no copy of it and does not sign you up for anything.

What do you do with my contact details?

They are used only to organise the meeting. I pass them on to no one and I send no newsletter. The details are on the Privacy page (in French).

Are online sessions recorded?

No, unless all participants agree.

May I reuse your texts or sermons?

Yes, for non-commercial use (personal reading, a group, a service of worship), respecting the conditions for reuse and the rights of third parties, in particular those of Bible translations. To avoid any confusion with the writer of the same name, please cite “Pierre Bergounioux (theologian)”, the title of the document, its date if one is given, and its URL. You may also mention my identifier, ORCID 0000-0003-4225-524X. Modifying a text or reusing it commercially requires my prior consent. See the Terms of use (in French).

Are you the writer Pierre Bergounioux?

No. I am a theologian, holder of a Master of Theology from the University of Geneva, and I am distinct from the writer of the same name born in 1949, published in particular by Gallimard. To identify my work, use the form “Pierre Bergounioux (theologian)” and, if possible, my ORCID identifier.

I am going through a difficult time. Can you support me?

The meetings I offer are devoted to the study of texts; they are neither therapeutic support nor spiritual direction. For a personal difficulty, you should turn to a qualified professional or to a spiritual leader you trust. See the page About the meetings offered (in French).
